This was given an 11 price target (closed over that today) but I think this will be a good long term hold and here is why. The CEO/founder has been involved with online gambling since 1996(!!!). Also, their CIOJohn Brackens was an Activision Blizzard networks manager. They've been in purchase mode recently and bought ggCircuit, a B2B cloud-based management for LAN centers, a tournament platform, and integrated wallet/point-of-sale solutions for enterprise customers. ggCircuit has over 1,000 connected locations and has worked with enterprises such as GameStop, Dell, Best Buy and Lenovo as well as universities such as Ohio State, Syracuse and North Carolina. Their ggLeap product has over 60 million hours of usage by over two million unique gamers on tens of thousands of public gaming screens inside centers worldwide. Also, they bought Helix esports. Helix eSports owns five esports centers, including two of the five largest centers in the US, where they deliver world-class customer service, esports programming and gaming infrastructure. ALSO, they bought Esports Gaming League (EGL). HAS OVER 350K registered gamers. "EGL is a great addition to our growing operations and further strengthens our ability to execute on our three-pillar strategy," commented Grant Johnson, CEO of Esports Entertainment Group. "EGL technology underpins the esports programs for some of the world's best-known sports franchises, including the LA Kings, Philadelphia Eagles, and Arsenal Football Club. You see the trend, and there is more companies than I listed purchased in the past twelve months. More partnerships could lead to growth as no other professional franchises have a partnership yet for tournaments. Financials: heavy dilution this past year, just started generating revenue in Q3, negative net income. The company they just bought is internet gambling site they just bought had 21M in revenue last year, est 28M for 2021. Company has very low debt, biggest liability is warrant liability of a few million. 8M of cash on hand, could get through at least 2 quarters without any additional positive cash flow (potentially some more dilution i would imagine). Small institutional ownership (1%) but large insider ownership (35%) Financials drop Feb 20th, so some DD on this let me know what you think. This company is worth around 150M(on 2/8), for comparison draftkings is over 46B and cathie wood also entered this sector buying draftkings so this could be on her list also.

In recognition of this milestone, I want to lay out how we got here, what my intentions are, and discuss what you would like to see from this subreddit moving forward. skip this part if you only care about gamblingstocks: It starts with a brief background on me . I got inspired by the idea to invest in weedstocks when I was younger because I thought Trudeau would legalize it when he ran for Prime Minister. I knew nothing about stocks or the market or $ for that matter but I did and still have a big nerd interest in politics. I knew that the BC Young Liberals had already put forward in their platform the idea to legalize weed. I also knew that for the first time ever Liberals went from being 1 or 2 party in power to being relegated to the 3rd Party Position behind Michael Ignatieff. (Hard for ppl without reference, this was the most embarassing thing to happen to the Liberal's in Canada's history. Furthermore, the perfect storm was created because the Conservatives had already been in power for 10 years under Stephen Harper and no one has ever won more than 3 elections in a row) Even better, a smokeshow young Justin Trudeau was the new leader of the Liberals and rode the last name of the most famous Prime Minister in history before him (his father Pierre Trudeau). The final thing that made me sure, the obvious fact that Colorado legalized and the US Federal government didn't shut that shit down immediately - that was the writing on the wall. So anyways, I somehow googled and found some random medical marijuana stocks online that had just started trading. With no experience, I walked into a bank with 3k cash and asked to buy Tweed (what CGC was first) they told me that it wasn't a safe investment and I was young. I left and opened up an online account that week. My second investment in Aurora dropped 50% in 1 week and stayed that way for 5 months. I thought I was the biggest moron in the world. 2 Years later, and I was sitting on an insane growth. I remember joining the fucking tweed subreddit and the CGC sub. I remember lurking /weedstocks when it was less than 500 subscribers... I remember thinking that was a fucking genius idea. That sub has close to 200,000 subscribers at present point in time and I bought CGC when its market cap was 200 million Canadian. Now, this is hard for me to admit, but I was young, had no exit plan, got greedy, had no idea what I was trying to do and thought I was a trader savant, God's gift to the world, and I ultimately lost a substantial amount of my money. Mind you, it was all profit to begin with but that didn't make it hurt less and it would have significantly changed my life but its important to learn from our past successes and our past mistakes. It honestly was a hard thing to move on from specifically because I believe it was such a unique phenomenon. Anyways I have continued to watch ppl try to replicate something close to what we saw with the "weedstocks" phenomenon (which is still happening mind you years later) and I had truly thought that it was a once in a lifetime play. It is of course a separate play but the similarities between weedstocks and gamblingstocks is obvious. In fact, it is my opinion that ppl are so hungry for another weedstocks play that they are turning to things like GME and DOGE coin (something completely unrelated) and /shroomstocks (very much so related). Shroomstocks is fast approaching 30,000 subscribers for investors of magic mushrooms stocks in the hopes that drug policy/laws will change to their benefit. With all do respect, as I hope the best for those investors, is this not the clearly better play? we have an 1) actual clear path to legalization 2) support across political parties 3) Real, established companies with actual business people 4) A pandemic which creates the perfect pressure for change! The gambling companies don't have to build warehouses to grow the product, spend money on heating and electricity, pesticides, storage, shipping and receiving? What about the 'product' in this industry? What is the comparative upkeep in that? So you can imagine how I felt when I stumbled across $SCR and Bill C-13 earlier this week. I have had this feeling exactly twice in my life before, with weedstocks and with crypto in 2017. I might be going crazy but I am seeing the exact same comments as plays as early weed. Ppl questioning if it will continue to go up after such a large run are missing the point. The Score was one of the most active traded stocks on the entire TSE yesterday. It was the same for weedstocks back in the day, it is not in the Canada's best interest to stop a homegrown company from doing well and becoming an international player. Trudeau and Company have all the reasons in the world for wanting to see this through. Why the fuck would you smack down a domestic company during a pandemic? Ultimately it is a gamble which is why there is such huge potential for us, but I would trust literally the same man who has already proven he can do something so different like legalize weed (because it may seem like long ago but it really was a debate in the recent past). And it really is his show at this point, because unless he does something really bad the other 2 have no chance in hell of beating him in an election any time soon. So with all that said, and with my previous history, I immediately checked reddit to see if I could find a community of likeminded ppl who were early on in this area. I have never done it but I thought there was a need to create a group and coalesce around a catchy name, so i decided on /gamblingstocks. the same day that I started to begin to create and edit the subreddit, I noticed something strange. Ppl were immediately beginning to join and subscribe to the sub and we hadn't even started. Ppl of course already had the same idea I had, some turned out had it months ago! That motivated me to put just a bit of effort into the layout, and I tried to promote the sub to other areas of reddit with varying success. I continued to try and promote/shill this sub instead of allow for growth organically because of 2 ideas: 1)how would anyone even know we exist and find this place to start and 2)While it will happen regardless, the premise is that this subreddit could serve as a catalyst point for the upcoming gamblingstock wave in the current market we now find ourselves. In other words, this ain't your daddy's stockmarket no more. Social media infects everything, and I believe that the pace will only continue to increase in the immediate future. Whether its picking US Presidents and World Leaders or manipulating the stock market (See GME) the era of social media investing has arrived. Our new gamblingstocks industry coupled with the new realities of social media are why I made this group. Fundamentals don't matter any more, nothing matters anymore. Values are detached from reality, look at housing prices in certain spots around the world. I was told Tesla is a joke and would never amount to anything because of something called finding value with P/E ratio? /s what a joke. Shouldn't have listened to that age old wisdom, if you have been living under a rock Tesla is now the most valuable car company in the world. Elon added Billions of Dollars in value to an internet coin named after a dog just by sending a joke tweet. (doge coin) We live in a world where if Elon Musk tweets $SCR the price will go to $50 in 1 hour. Heck it doesn't even have to be Elon at this point. That is the reality that we face today. And with that new reality, comes new problems and opportunities. I hope to ride those opportunities with every one of you in the coming year. I fully expect to see stock market only social media stars and celebrities. The lines are quickly becoming blurred. Its not Warren Buffet anymore, its kids dancing stock tips to their follower on Tik Tok videos. And the best part. We are not shilling something fake or bullshit! We have a PROVEN product as old as time itself with a tested, real market. We have actual legalization change and public opinion change and the conversations on the matter are frankly already over in the public discourse. So with all of that together I truly believe that at some point what we have already found out will hit "the singularity" and then it will go viral. I don't know when that will happen. We don't even need it to happen. But I believe it will. So I will use the power of the internet to see if I can make this come to fruition faster, to see if I am completely full of shit, and to bring regular ppl together to see if we can make some $$$ in the interim. Because after all, that is the power (good or bad) of social media! Now, I am just one simple person, and I literally have learned about the stocks and done all of this since Friday. So far, I have tried throwing a bunch of stuff at the wall, and see what sticks. However, as time goes on I want to make sure that I conduct myself in a manner that is open, transparent, and is a good reflection of this subreddit. As expected they were down a bit during 2020 due to covid, but that is about to change across the industry with sports opening up properly and sports betting being legalised in many US states and hopefully Canada to help raise tax funds for covid expenses (never will sports betting have been more socially acceptable, almost encouraged!). They achieved 3 million active monthly users (4.3 million in q1 2019, should see this or higher again once sports start up properly - 62% of those users were in the US, 27% in Canada and the remaining 11% in other international markets). Users had an average of 70 sessions per month (75 the year prior), so 3*70 = 210 million users per month. 292 million video views for esports in just Q4 alone, year-over-year growth of 243%! Their esports tiktok account has over 1 million followers while their sports tiktok account has almost 2.5 million (up over 500k in the last quarter). Over 1.5 million youtube subscribers for their esports channel. Their twitter account has ~600k followers, almost double what DKNG have! Their social sports content across Twitter, FB, Instagram and TikTok achieved an average monthly reach of about 103 million;
Score already cover women's sports, doing this without having to follow the competitors or have it requested by women shows a genuine interest in supporting women's sports. Hopefully this will extend to allowing sports betting on women's sports;

Legalisation of sports betting across more US states and Canada. The governor of NY has now expressed interest after previously being opposed to the idea, so too has Texas for example. Score do not yet have a partnership with a NY casino, but hopefully they will get on to that, they do have access to Texas through PENN;
Partnerships with NFL and NHL would be awesome to go along with the NBA and MLB partnerships;
Successfully competing with the big players like DKNG (and now FUBO too), hopefully with juicy earnings reports in to the future (if we do, look at the performance and current prices of DKNG and PENN, I'd be extremely happy if we ever made it to CAD$20/share, if we got to DKNG's current USD price we'll be in tendie heaven);
Huge uptake in sports betting with a rally of public support to help cover the public costs associated with Covid;

Yet another Doordash advice guide! Midwest edition
So this is something I wrote for my friends and I didn't really plan on posting this but a couple of people asked me for my little guide. Keep in mind I live in a town with a population of 250,000 people. not a major metropolis but also not a small town. I highly doubt this advice would be good in 1 million+ population cities at all, but where I live your bigger tips tend to be 5-10$ 5 is average, 10 is rarer and 20 won't happen more than a handful of times a week. I have worked in two different markets one year in Colorado in one in Nebraska, besides the way traffic flows things are essentially the same, I actually made my reddit account just to be able to post on this subreddit hence the name DasherCO HOW PAY WORKS Doordash offers you 3 dollars per delivery. So if you get an offer for 3$ that means thats all you will get from that order, a customer theoretically could prefer tipping in cash but I can tell you out of 3000 deliveries I've gotten MAYBE 50 cash tips. Do not rely on that! door dash offers 3$=no tip 4$=1 dollar tip 5$=2 dollar tip etc But once you get to 7.50$ thats when they stop showing you the full amount you'll get. Normally this goes up to 8 or 9$. Now if the order is huge it may go up quite a bit more. These are the orders you want to try holding out for if it is super busy. Don't waste time with low offers. The amount may be different in your market so pay attention. If however doordash is offering a bonus per delivery that amount will go up so for example if doordash is offering 3$ extra per order then your offers go like this 6$=no tip 7$=1 dollar tip 10.50$=4.50 or higher tip If accepting orders gradually got you to a worse and worse location so you could maintain a good hourly rate and you see a high mileage offer that has an uneven number on it 9 times out of ten that means a big tip. Example: if the offer is for 13.92 and you have to go 7+miles you can usually expect a 10-20 dollar tip, if its 8.71 and 7+miles it gets smaller but usually its a 7-10$ tip. If it gets you back to where you want to be, generally it's worth it. This is only if good orders keep slingshotting you away from the usual hot zone. However keep in mind if its 7.61 or something that is not going to be a high tip. I have learned all of this through trial and error just because I like knowing what I'm getting myself into with orders that are essentially a gamble. Also these are not taking into account peak pay so if you have peak pay make sure you take that into account, one time I got fooled by a 11.87 offer because it was 2.50 peak pay, base pay ended up being 6.50. Another thing to note is that if an order has a pickup time that seems unusually tight or is literally before you could have reasonably got there that means its been declined to hell and back and is probably garbage. GENERAL DAY TO DAY ADVICE People on the doordash reddit will say don't accept Walmart orders. This is generally a good plan, but not if you work in the morning. If you work in the morning Walmart is your cash cow. The problem with Walmart is they don't let you see who tipped, you know about it 24 hours later. The good thing about Walmart is they suggest the customer tips 7$. This is kinda new, but it has been effective. I have gotten a lot of 7$ tips the next day from Walmart orders at roughly a 6/10 rate compared to the old days where 1 out of 10 people would tip. Try your best to take 2 Walmart orders at a time, the base offer for Walmart orders is 4$ so potentially each order is worth 11$ and each double is a potential 22$. If the order is unreasonably gigantic you can always unassign and leave. Don't take those 5 pallets of bottled water. You want the small Walmart orders in the morning that wont take much time. But not so small that they wont tip. something that takes one trip but you gotta load your arms up to get to their door. But never ever EVER take a Walmart order that will put you in danger of missing out on any part of lunch rush. That is never a good idea and will most likely cost you in the grand scheme of things. If lunch starts in 30 minutes, decline every Walmart order you get. They will never come close to the speed of food orders. Don't be a dick to most merchants, some just genuinely take time or have bad days, but if it becomes a regular thing then either stop taking orders from them or be assertive so they either move faster or blacklist you. SHIT THAT HELPS WITH THE JOB The only thing I can honestly recommend paying your own money for is a drink carrier, it's 13 dollars from doordash and it's super fucking useful for carrying orders with more than 2 drinks up stairs. It's high quality and durable and if you do something like Jimmy john's as well it's a must. https://doordashstore.com/product.aspx?ID=514297 A pizza bag is super fucking useful but not something I'd pay for personally, I got mine for free but it's nowhere near as important as the drink carrier. Still it will make customers feel better and rate you higher so that's up to you, you can get one for 12 bucks on that same site but get the caviar branded one its 12 bucks, vs doordash's 26 dollar one. The one thing I can't tell you is if the caviar one is good quality I know the DD one is because I have one. There is also options online for buying stuff like this you can do, check out amazon and other such places it may be cheaper. I just use doordash brand stuff because I assume it looks more professional and to some people that matters. You only need one tote bag, just make sure if you get a 2 stacked order and can't fit it all in 1 tote just make sure when you walk up to the customer at least their order is in a bag so they think it's fresh. I also recommend immediately getting a second red card from the website. maybe even a third. You can't dash without one connected to your account, you can order them and have them mailed for free 1 at a time. Losing them is easy and not being able to dash is a bitch. TECHNICAL SHIT Pay attention to your market, whos fast and who is slow. Take a mental note of it. Are these guys slower than they are at lunch because they have long cook times and way less staff? Or are they faster because they have short wait times and no one is there? There is niche stuff that not many people are going to know the answer to like what street gets clogged during rush hour, or what restaurants are going to sling out deliveries only after they have done all their in store stuff. Did you just take a 100$ chipotle order to a preschool that tipped well? Ask the staff if they do that regularly and try to get that order every Friday. A good formula for me is not doing anything that will make me earn less than 15$ an hour ( I honestly can't remember the last time I had a week that the average was that low ). To me there is no point in doing this job if you're just making a dollar or two above minimum wage then you're just beating up your vehicle for no reason. 5$ per delivery 1.5$ per mile 20 minutes per delivery. These basic rules, normally nets me 15-25$ an hour. My lowest average over the last 8 weeks was 19.80. Keep in mind those are my absolute minimum requirements. I also try to keep top dasher status but that's important to me because I have trouble going to sleep at a regular time every day. Sometimes I'm in bed at 10 pm, sometimes I'm not going to sleep until 4 am. Top dasher is hard to keep and I have to break my minimum rules on the last 2 or 3 days of the month which WILL result in a lower hourly average unless you're super fucking lucky. But since it's just 2 days out of the month I take that hit, I lose 100$ a month doing it though I would guess. top dasher is good if you're like me and really don't like having a schedule. If you do just work lunch or dinner then it is really unnecessary and bound to just piss you off. And that's pretty much it. If anything here is confusing let me know, also to any mods reading this I am wondering if we could start a thread or directory of sorts where Specific guides for specific markets could be permalinked because not every market is the same and advice can vary from user to user. Old Austin Tales: Cedar Choppers & The Travis County Dog Wars - 1902-1923
There are few photos of the things I'm going to impart to you today but I usually start with a related photo from the UNT archive so here is one roughly related for today: Eanes Rock Schoolhouse Students Outside - "Photograph of Eanes Rock Schoolhouse students having lunch outside. They are seated in front of a pile of rocks with trees in the background, on the back of the photo '1930s Students having lunch in the Eanes Cafeteria' is written in blue pen." - 1930 See how their school 'cafeteria' was just the kids sitting around outside the old Eanes Rock School? Not sure if this was an outside picnic or if they didn't usually eat inside the one room school. If you have been here a while you might recognize the name 'Eanes' as the name of the area school district that is home to football powerhouse Westlake High School. Westlake High isn't in AISD or even in Austin proper, but instead is in Westlake Hills, TX to the west and southwest of town. Yet future NFL Hall of Fame Quarterback Drew Brees went to "Austin Westlake" High School according to the statkeepers. This is meant to differentiate it from another Westlake High in Ft. Worth, but it's still accurate. The Village of Westlake Hills, TX was founded by an Austinite in the mid 20th century. Where did these communities like Rollingwood and Westlake Hills come from? What was in the area of these vast suburban neighborhoods and office complexes off Loop 360 before the 20th century? Even some native Austinites who grew up knowing the area only as 'the rich part of town' might not realize what the places used to be known for before all that. These are separate areas that have a history all their own, but their histories are intertwined with the history of Austin and the Texas Hill Country at large. Today using help from a few different sources I'm going to attempt to tell an abridged version of the entire tale of these towns which block in Austin from the southwest, and in doing so tell the tale of one particular series of incidents that took place in the early 20th century between Austinites and rural area residents to the west known as cedar choppers. First a little backstory. In previous posts I've talked about how the first settlers to the county were farmers and ranchers who settled in an area that is today east of town. Govalle and Montolpolis were early settlements around the same time as Waterloo, which eventually became Austin. As we all know, The Balcones Fault Line divides the geology of Travis County into fertile blackland prarie to the east and hardscrabble limestone hills to the west. When the first bold farmers dared to settle west of this boundary in the hills to the west of the nascent City of Austin in the late 1840s and 1850s, it was a lot harder to farm the land, and the area was a known hangout for several roving bands of Comanche and Apache. The new settlers in this area were a hardy bunch. There were Scotch-Irish, Swedes, Italians and Germans, not totally Americanized. They had first originally settled in Appalachia and then migrated down the different mountain ranges of the South-Eastern US and through the pine forests of East Texas until they could go west no more. West there was only desert and Comanche. So they settled in well watered hills west of town and eventually all throughout the hill county. They brought with them their adapted ways of the southeast. Some today might call them 'mountain folk' and some others might call them early versions of 'hillbillies'. Both would be right on some counts and wrong on others. Settlers continued to come to Western Travis County throughout the 19th century although the area was known for being a hotbed of Counter-rebel Union insurgent activity during the Civil War. They wanted no part in hostilities and just wanted to be left alone to work their land. These hillbillies didn't own slaves. They didn't believe in it and the few who did were too poor for it anyway. The land was poor for farming and after the fields were abandoned and the livestock had eaten most of the grass away, native species of cedar trees grew over the spent rocky earth. These were not quite like the cedar trees we love to hate today, which are called 'sap' cedar (Ashe juniper) and grows in clumps of trees. This was something called 'Heart cedar' which grew individually as tall and as fat around as small pine trees. The people were a resourceful lot and so they started utilizing the resources they had, and by the turn of the 20h century mostly all they had was a hell of a lot of cedar trees. Now before the first dam across the Colorado was built in 1893 forming what was at the time called Lake MacDonald (now Lake Austin), it was a lot easier to cross the river when it wasn't flooded. There were several crossings, called 'fords' where you could mostly walk across without getting wet with maybe a little help from some strategically placed stones. The most famous one that survives in name only is Marshall Ford which is the area around where Mansfield Dam was built in the 1940s. Tinnin Ford Road off of Riverside Drive marks the rough spot of another one, although it was called 'Stone's Ford' on old maps. In places where the river ran deeper and before the first Congress Ave. Bridge was erected in the 1880s there were small ferry services but these weren't meant for more than one or two horse carts at a time and ran the risk of capsizing. After the dam was built, the area west of where Tom Miller Dam is today was almost totally cut off from the City of Austin. If you think about it, most of the modern bridges we depend on today except for the Congress Ave. Bridge and the Union Pacific train bridge were built after 1935. There was no way to cross the lake/river for many miles upstream for many years, even after first dam busted in 1900 (it was rebuilt around 1913 and then busted again). This kept these 'mountain folk' isolated, who by that time were well on the way to becoming known as 'cedar choppers' in the City of Austin. The original settling families intermarried among one another and eventually formed interwoven 'clans' that started feuds with other clans. Sometime I think in the 1980s someone wrote a high school report on the history of Westlake Hills, and I don't know how, but it ended up in the UNT archive through the Westbank Community Library. It's not a bad writeup, I would have given it an A. I'm going to quote a little bit from it to advance the story:
... After the (Civil) War, a few settlers gradually moved into the hills. The land was too rugged for farming, so most families raised cattle, sheep and goats. They made lye soap, cooked on wood stoves, and used coal oil for lighting. In 1872 Robert Eanes and George Norvell built a log schoolhouse near the present Eanes School. They furnished it with split-log benches. Children wrote on slates using native limestone as chalk. The schoolhouse was also used for church services, conducted by circuit-riding preachers, until a stone church was built in 1928. As the years went by, a community grew up around the schoolhouse. The first Austin Dam (site of the present Tom Miller Dam) was built across the Colorado River in 1893. The dam broke in the flood of 1900 but was rebuilt in 1913. Before these dams were built, Austin folks forded the river at Taylor's Slough, driving their buggies and wagons into the hills so they could chop firewood. The newly created Lake McDonald (now Lake Austin) prevented anyone from fording the river. Except for a road to the southwest that went to Bee Cave, the hills were virtually cut off from civilization. These isolated hills became home to cedar choppers. Winston Bode called them that "proud, independent, robust tribe of transplanted Southerners who came to flat-cut cedar and burn charcoal."6 They slow-burned cedar into charcoal, which they sold to general stores on 6th Street and other places. Like other mountain people, they worked hard, had little schooling, intermarried, bore several children, brewed corn whiskey, and danced barefoot to fiddle music. Except for coming to town with their charcoal and maybe drinking on Saturday night, the cedar choppers stayed to themselves. Austin folks used to say that you didn't go into the shills unless you knew someone, and it wasn't safe to travel on Bee Caves Road after dark. One man who dared to venture into the hills was Emmett Shelton, Sr. An attorney, newly graduated from law school in 1928, he walked to.the hilltop where the County Line Restaurant now stands. He bought the hilltop for $500. In subsequent years he bought more land, sometimes for as low as $4.50 or $10 an acre. When he wasn't running his trial practice with brother Polk or dickering in politics (he ran for the Austin City Council in the 1930s), he was in the County Clerk's office, tracking down titles to land. "Most of the people who owned land in the hills didn't live here," Shelton said. "Usually they had inherited it from someone. Most didn't know where the property lines were or how much was there." As he wandered through the brush, checking property lines, he made friends with cedar choppers and later defended many of them in their scrapes with the law. During the 1920s and 1930s, the hills were a haven for bootlegging. Cedar choppers set up stills on the creeks and guarded them with firearms. More than one federal agent was killed trying to come up on a still by surprise. According to Emmett Shelton, Sr., "There was more commercial activity in West Lake Hills then than there is now." A favorite spot for Austin folks who wanted to drink and gamble was the Cedar Crest Night Club, site of the present County Line Restaurant. When it opened, someone asked owner Mervin Ash, "How are you going to keep these hillbillies from coming in and taking you over?" Without batting an eye, he replied, "We'll just put napkins and tablecloths on the tables." As the country worked its way out of the Depression, the hills began to enjoy economic growth. In 1937 B.B. "Pap" Beard started selling hamburgers and tamales in a log-cabin store on Bee Caves Road.8 His was the first business establishment in the hills. Later he added a gasoline station. Also in 1937 a new two-room schoolhouse was built to educate the growing numbers of children whose families had moved to the area. ...
So you had this informal unincorporated rural community called Eanes on the other side of the rivelake with their own rural ways and culture separate from Austin's. Then all these individual homesteader families dotting the landscape all over the western part of the county, in places like today's Oak Hill (was called Oatmanville), and Upper and Lower Bull Creek, and Jollyville. These were in turn part of a larger trend of settlement across the entire Hill Country. The failed farmers turned cedar choppers had settled clear up the western side of Williamson County and parts north, and also down into Blanco, and the western side of Hays, and Guadalupe counties. These places were far removed from the city at the time, being sometimes more than a few hours by horse or oxcart to get there, yet they lived in a symbiotic relationship with Austin supplying the growing city with cedar related products like fence posts, railroad ties, firewood and charcoal. We will get back to Mr. Emmett Shelton Sr. in a few minutes, who was the Father of Westlake Hills and whose name now adorns the 'low water crossing' bridge under the dam today, but first I want to tell you about the Dog Wars. There are many books written about the cedar choppers but probably one of the best is The Cedar Choppers: Life on The Edge of Nothing by Ken Roberts. (h/t/ Noogisms) Written just a few years ago, Mr. Roberts tells the complete tale of the cedar choppers with anecdotes and interviews from the descendants of the people who were there, following the families from Europe to The Hill Country, and has researched the genealogy of the intermarried clans formed by these early hill folk right up to the modern day. I can't recommend this book enough , and any longtime resident ought to get around to reading it eventually. I turn to this excellent volume for help in telling a bit about the events of 1902-1923 known as The Travis County Dog Wars. This concerns a particular few clans of cedar choppers in the lower Bull Creek area. Quoting from page 70:
There was a time when the banker and doctors and politicians used the hills as their playground. Before a law was passed in 1923 outlawing the practice, they would bring packs of trained dogs to Bull Creek to run down deer, threatening the best source of meat for the residents. Once again, outsiders from the city were invading the hills with guns, and the hill people didn't like it. They started waiting for the hunters to come. One unidentified BUll Creek resident said, "Whenever we'd see a whole bunch of dog men coming up from town, I'd saddle up my old mare and ride over to my partner's house. Then he'd do the same with the next neighbor, and so on 'til there was a pair of eyes lookin' out at the dog men from pert' near every bush." and they shot the dogs, starting what was called "The Travis County Dog Wars". The hunters went ballistic: one physician had prize hounds shipped from Kentucky "ambushed by damned hillbillies who pay no taxes." A merchant said., "Those aren't human beings gunning our dogs down. Hell got overpopulated so the devil moved the worst lot over to Bull Creek and gave them guns to play with. A reward of $250 was posted, but nobody responded. Finally enough evidence was gathered to indict Paul Waechter of the Bull Creek clan. His brother Lewis was married to a daughter of Lee Boatright, one of the patriarchs of the clan, so Paul was well connected. The article said the "young mountaineer, despite loss of one arm, had the reputation of a rifleman who could knock a gnat's eyebrows off at a hundred paces." A hundred witnesses were called to the stand during the trial, but nobody would testify against him. Pail's younger brother was asked, "'Son, did you ever see a dead dog in the hills?' 'Yes, sir, Judge, I saw one.' the youth replied. 'Well, son, what do you think killed that dog?' 'Judge, I believe that poor hound must have got hooked to death by a buck.'" To mollify the powerful men who demanded retribution, Paul Waechter was fined, but the fine was dismissed "for fear it would around the mountaineers' ire, and that the hillbillies would stop shooting dogs and start shooting hunters." ... The hills west of Austin became no-man's land. Frank Wilson, who grew up in Hyde Park and knew some of the families from Bull Creek, said: Austin People didn't go out there. No, you stayed out of there. You go to Dry Creek then you'd better slow down, and when you got to Bull Creek you'd better stop" (laughter). ...
And so there you have the basic story of the Travis County Dog Wars. It's important to note that in general, the people of the community were running afoul with the authorities in the county courthouse over the river in Austin. There were not just the dog wars but the aforementioned interclan feuds and sometimes even good old fashioned domestic violence and abuse which sent many a "mountain man" to jail. This only worsened as the 1910s became the 1920s and Prohibition took hold. A good number of cedar choppers became full time moonshiners for the duration. For help in defending themselves and their clan families, the patriarchs contracted with one trusted lawyer to almost always represent them in court. That lawyer was the previously mentioned Emmett Shelton Sr. The rub was that he got paid in land, and he wasn't cheap either. He improved upon the land he owned and laid out roads following old cedar chopper trails. Quoting again from Cedar Choppers: Life on The Edge of Nothing, page 188 tells a story of the kind of protection Mr. Shelton provided:
Luther Pierce tells the story of his brother Ed, and how Emmett protected him in a confrontation with the law. What caused it was somebody had cut cedar posts in the wrong place, on Emmett's side. And Ed followed their muddy tracks out of there. And Emmett had a double-barrel shot-gun. Well, he took it with him, him and Ed went over there. Have you heard of John Lloyd? John Lloyd was real rich. He had built all kind of mansions over there in West Lake Hills. John Lloyd's son-in law was there and he was talking real, real smart. And the sheriff was there too. And John Lloyd's son-in-law walked up to Ed and shaking his finger at him, right in his face, said, "What are you doing over here anyway? You're the son-of-a-bitch that probably cut these posts." So Ed him him and knocked him down on the ground. And that sheriff told John Lloyd's son-in-kaw, he said, "You can file on him for that." He said "Well. then. that's just what l'll do." So the sheriff was handcuffing Ed. Ed said Emmett scared him more than the sheriff--he got one handcuff on him before Emmett knocked 'em. "You leave that man alone. You get them handcuffs off of him. I am his attorney." And then he turned to that man and said, "You file on him and I'll charge you five thousand dollars a tree for every cedar that you cut on my places and we'll go through there and count the stumps." So he unlocked the handcuffs and let him go. Emmett Shelton was a very effective lawyer. If the cedar choppers couldn't win a confrontation one-on-one, the whole clan would jump in. And if that didn't work, they called Emmett Shelton.
Going back to that high school report in the UNT archive linked to previously, picking up where I left off:
After World War II, Shelton urged his friend Austin Mayor Tom Miller to build a bridge across the Colorado by the newly rehabilitated dam that would carry Miller's name. When the proposal was brought before the city council, Shelton promised: "If you build this bridge, I won't run for city council again." His strategy must have worked, because the council issued the bonds and built the low-water bridge in 1948. The bridge opened a second traffic artery into hills, connecting Lake Austin Boulevard with Red Bud Trail. Shelton began selling land in earnest, usually asking $1,500 for 2.5 acres. On Saturdays, he rented equipment from the county and bulldozed roads, often following the horse trails and wagon paths used by the cedar choppers. In the back of his mind was a dream for a prime residential community. Electricity, telephones, and other utilities were slow in coming. At first land owners dug their own water wells or formed private water companies, and each house was built with its own septic tank. In 1949 Eanes School, which had started a nine-month school term only four years earlier, merged with Brewton Springs School, located 10 miles west on Bee Caves Road. By 1950 Eanes had 80 students in grades 1 through 6 (older students went to Austin High School). The same year Eanes bought its first school bus.'' In 1953 Shelton and his neighbors incorporated as the village of West Lake Hills. He drew a map by hand, and citizens voted 73-0 in favor of the proposition. In 1958, the village became a city with broader municipal powers, especially in matters of zoning to protect the environment. The city's founding documents states: "It is the powerful and heartfelt wish of the residents of West Lake HIlls that they may be permitted to live their lives with the least interference from any outside influences that might become annoying or burdensome...." The city fathers intended that residents remain as free as possible of government, providing their own water, sewage, garbage pickup, and other conveniences. The idea was, "If you need something, you do it yourself," said Janet Poage, who moved to the city in 1966 and chaired the Zoning and Planning Commission. For several years, residents voluntarily contributed money--in lieu of taxes--to pay minimal city expenses. And the early mayors ran city business from their homes, storing records in spare bedroom closets. Protection of the environment was essential. The first mayor, Dr. Dan Grieder (dean of a downtown business college), told a local reporter: "We want to keep it the way it's been," forbidding any activity that would "disfigure, destroy or mar the glorious beauty of our wooded hills and valleys." During the early years, citizens gathered several times a year for town meetings. They assembled at Eanes School over a covered dish supper of fried chicken and potato salad. Then they talked about who to nominate for city offices, sometimes cajoling a neighbor to serve. Though congenial for the most part, some meetings became spirited. According to Janet Poage, "People just stood up and said what they thought. It was hilarious. One fellow even threatened to shoot the mayor." ...
The 1940s brought the current dam and the new bridge to Red Bud Trail (along with the Lamar bridge), and connected the western part of the county back with the western part of the city, but as the Village of Westlake Hills continued to expand and modernize into the 1960s just as Austin did, the cedar chopper lifestyle started fading into the past. Natural gas heaters in homes became the norm by the mid 20th century and wood burning stoves became relics used only by very poor people. Charcoal could now be bought at a grocery store and didn't require special handling that cedar charcoal did. Rollingwood, named for the rolling brakes of cedar trees, and Westlake Hills were founded around the same time and evolved together. They were joined in the 1970s by the Lost Creek subdivision. And then the office parks came. The cedar chopper families started sending their kids to the new 2 room Eanes School in the 40s which was then after a few expansions joined in 1969 by Westlake Highschool and then Hill Country Middle School in 1975. And so that generation (the generation after the kids in the OP photo without a real school cafeteria) became accustomed to the suburban way of life and the cedar chopper way was lost. By the time the north and south sections of the new Loop 360 were connected by the Pennybacker Bridge in 1982, there was almost nothing representing the cedar choppers left in Western Travis County besides many old family graveyards and the occasional random car selling firewood on the side of the road. According to the book "Cedar Choppers: Life on The Edge of Nothing", you can still find some descendants in the backwoods but the way of life is lost. Their territory at its peak ranged the entire hill county from Hillsboro down to Uvalde, from Austin west to Fredricksburg, where ever the cedar grew. In June of 1974, Emmett Shelton Sr. gave an oral history which was transcribed and is also available in the UNT archive through the Westbank Library. Straight from the horse's mouth he tells some anecdotes about buying and transferring, among other parcels, a certain 500 acres of land in the area (I think mentioned in the beginning), sometimes for the City of Austin, sometimes for himself. It's probably too long to copypaste here but it's a good read and gives an idea of what sort of man he was. Lots of bonus pics today, and even a few links.
